Washington State: Initiative 933
The Original "Son of Measure 37" Goes Down to Defeat
Washington voters roundly rejected a regulatory takings ballot measure, Initiative-933, modeled on Oregon's Measure 37 and sponsored by the Washington Farm Bureau. The final results in Washington are nearly the exact inverse of polling numbers before the campaign began. As voters learned more about the pitfalls and false promises, an initial 2-to-1 deficit turned into a solid victory for I-933 opponents. The opposition successfully focused on messages that emphasized the high taxpayer costs, lousy development that would result from waivers and loopholes, and general voter suspicion of ballot measures.
